FG To Strenghten Land Registration Process Nationwide

The Federal Government began a nationwide land titling and registration through the Presidential Technical Committee on Land Reform, PTCLR.


The maiden zonal workshop for stakeholders in the South-East geopolitical zone kicked off yesterday in Enugu.

“Since formal land registration commenced in the country over 100 years ago, less than three percent of land nationwide has been registered,” said Prof. Peter Adeniyi, Chairman, PTCLR, in his opening remarks.

“Land issues touch all strata of the society. It serves as socio-political instrument to reshape the economy. In particular, it is an invaluable economic factor for empowerment and national development.

“The absence of proper documentation of interests in land has been compounded by several other issues, including ignorance, illiteracy, inadequate regulations and policy guidelines, poor governance infrastructure, prohibitive cost of processing titles, absence of transparency, inadequate skilled manpower, overlapping institutional functions,customs and tradition.”

Adeniyi said the essence of the workshop was to, “encourage and assist states and local governments to establish an arbititration mechanism for land ownership conflict resolution; make recommendations for the establishment of National Depository for Land Titles Holdings and Records in all states of the Federation and the FCT.”

He further revealed that the PTCLR adopted the Systematic Land Titling and Registration,SLTR, in line with global best practices and urged the stakeholders to embrace the policy.

He said that the workshop will be conducted in all the six geopolitical zones of the country.
