The court attacks in Ekiti State has taken a new twist as hoodlums took to the streets on Friday burning houses and looting shops, leading to the declaration of a 7pm – 7am curfew by Governor Kayode Fayemi.
“…there would be no movement between the hours of 7.00 p.m. and 7.00 a.m. everyday till further notice,” announced Fayemi on Friday.
This came following the killing of a former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state, Omolafe Aderiye, who was shot at close range in his office located at Ijigbo, Ado Ekiti, the capital city.
Aderiye was said to have been in the company of the Governor-elect, Ayodele Fayose when thugs linked to him beat up a judge at the State High Court on Thursday.
“I am advised incontrovertibly that thugs acting on the command of Mr. Ayo Fayose, who was also present to lend his clout to the travesty, brazenly assaulted a senior judge and urged his thugs to beat him up and tear his clothes,” Fayemi said.
The tribunal sitting could not hold on Thursday after hoodlums storm the premises, beating a judge to stupor. The sitting was adjourned to October 14.
“The State can no longer afford to witness the bizarre spectacle of the beating up of judicial officers and wanton intimidation of lawyers and court personnel,” Fayemi said.
The judge who was battered by the thugs was rescued by the State Police Commissioner, Taiwo Lakanu, who has now assured judges of their safety when the sitting resumes.
