David de Gea explains what scared him about Manchester United penalty save

Manchester United goal keeper David de Gea admits he was worried that he might have come too far off his goal line when he denied Mark Noble from the penalty spot at the weekend.

David, 30, saved his first penalty in over five years on Sunday afternoon as Manchester United held on to dramatically defeat West Ham in the Premier League.

United netted late on through Jesse Lingard to swing momentum in their favour but looked to have lost the game deep into stoppage time when Luke Shaw handled the ball in his own box.

The scene was set for West Ham captain Mark Noble to come off the bench and take the spot-kick with his first touch of the match only for De Gea to deny him with a fine save to his left.

"Well as soon as I made the save I thought 'maybe I went from the line?' So I was a bit scared," De Gea admitted to MUTV after the win.

"But it was a good save at the end of the game so it is massive for us."

De Gea had failed to save any of the previous 40 penalties which he had faced and struggled to describe just how much of a relief it was to have finally ended his unwanted run.

He added: "It is difficult to describe with words how it feels to save a penalty at the end of the game, to make the team win. All the fans, teammates, staff altogether as a team we were great."
